A low-stakes, all-fun resolution I had in 2021 was to jump into water (preferably earth water—lakes, ocean, river, etc.) at least once each month. To take a moment each month for a bit of a baptism. I’ve decided to do it again in 2022. In the cold months, there is something almost cinematic about these dips. On a Summer day at Madison Beach in Seattle, you have to lay claim to your patch of sand. There are lifeguards and diving boards a bit off shore with a roaring audience. In February, there is no one. It’s a closed set. You throw your clothes off like a robe and are ready for action. You run into the grayness and coldness and then the air changes—from too cold to almost warm. The warmth of a false spotlight. I look back to shore—my audience of two. (husband and daughter.) Is my daughter directing this? If so, I think she’s disappointed. We might need a few more takes. But the feeling of it is familiar and refreshing and—dare I say—hopeful. This cinematic feeling is somewhere between the ending of The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine—which are both actually beginnings in their own way.
A Little Woo:
That Moon Again: There’s a new moon tomorrow. New moons are all about trying new things, bringing more stuff into your world, and claiming what you want more of in your life. I love the way this article talks about the foolishness of newness. We ALL look like idiots at the beginning of new things! And it’s glorious.
